Rob Johnstone work shop

Rob Johnstone work shop:

An ex student came in today to help us with our media course work and give us some individual advice. Rob gave us some advice about editing and also about our story boards. He told us that the more in depth we go in our story boards, it will help us more in the future when filming our music video or short film . He stressed that doing/making drafts first helped immensely as it gave him a rough idea of what would work and what wouldn't work. He said it also helped as it meant that you can receive audience feedback to help with all three of your ancillaries.

Genre

Genre:

Media products can be classified into categories or genre. The word 'genre' comes from the french word meaing 'type' or 'class'. A genre can be often recognised by its distinguishing features (codes and conventions). These features associated with a genres style and content, for example a particular setting, character ,types and technical codes(lighting or music). An example being a 'horror' film with have intense music and dark lighting.

Sound

Sound:

My partner and I decided to recreate the sound of  someone walking on gravel, as we think that it would be a good way to start our music video, hearing the sound of someone walking , however not being able to see them.
An example being that at the very start of the music video for "fifth Harmony-work from home". You can hear the sound effect for some one walking , however this is only for  few seconds.
Overall we thin that this would be the best sound effect that linked to our idea the most.

Sound is the backbone for any music video, so is really important. When editing my music video I will make sure that i adhere to Andrew Goodwin's theory, editing on the beat.

Shot list

Shot List:

For our music video we will be using a variety of different shots to capture our characters.

  • Pan
  • High angles
  • Extreme close ups
  • Medium close ups
  • Long shot
  • Close up

We aim to use a wide range of shots , as each shot will symbolize something within the shot. Such as an exteme close up means the audience will be able to see the facial expressions on the character to know exactly what they are feeling. Another example being a pan this will allow the audience to see the characters body image as well as the different mice en scene within the shot, e.g. the scene with the flowers in the bath, we use a medium close up so you can see the facial expressions and the flowers. Overall we hope to have a variety of shots in our music video.

Media language

Media Language:

Media language means the way in which a text is constructed to create meaning for a reader or viewer of the text. All media texts are constructed, someone has made decisions about how they should be constructed so then the form matches the content and with a particular audience in mind.

A few Examples:
  • Lighting
  • Costumes
  • Makeup

What we will do in our Music video:

Related imageIn my partners and I music video we intend to keep everything simplistic, therefore we will have simple hair and little makeup, we intend to keep the skin very natural and make it glow. We believe this we be the best idea as it will enhance our characters natural beauty, and will put across a statement that you do not need a lot of makeup to look beautiful. We will keep the costumes simple as well so it allows the audience to focus more on the dancing and the characters instead of what they are wearing.

Lighting

Lighting:

In my group we collected some research to find our favourite lighting techniques and what we are most likely to use in our music video. We decided that our favourite lighting was low key, as we think it adds mystery and suspense to a video. Low key lighting creates shadows and is often used in horror films, so lighting has become a convention of those genres (horror). An example that we found for low key lighting was "1975
Somebody Else" music video and an example that it is used in film is in "Harry potter".
Here are some examples that i took for low lighting.

In my group we came to agreement that in our music video we are most likely to use back lighting throughout as well as other lighting techniques.
We thought that back lighting will work best with our music video, as it can create silhouettes of the characters and can add shadows and depth to the scene. Back lighting is the process of illuminating the character/subject form the back. Back lighting can be both natural or artificial light however I think that in our music video we will use artificial light, therefore we can have more control over it.

An example for back lighting in a film is "kong skull island" and a music video example is "MNEK, Don't call this love".

Here are some examples that i took for back lighting.
